If you want a pet that is full of personality, reasonably quiet, likes attention, and is very animated you need look no further than the Green cheek conure.  These guys adapt well to almost any situation.  They love to play and get into mischief.  Fearless and bold they can and have got into "situations" with other family pets (i.e. cats, dogs, larger parrots) and some have lost that battle.  For these reasons, extreme caution should be used when they are out of their cages.  Never leave your green cheek baby unsupervised!

We are pleased to be able to offer many of the color mutations including Pineapple, Cinnamon, Yellowsided, as well as Turquoise, Yellowsided Turquoise, Cinnamon Turquoise and hopefully Pineapple Turquoise.  Our babies are banded at about 12-14 days as that is when they are typically pulled from the nestbox for hand feeding.  They are allowed to wean at their own pace and we have found that no two babies are alike!  We have had the youngest wean at 6 weeks and the oldest hang on and on.  Our babies are reserved early on so please contact us via the contact form to let us know if you are interested and what color you seek.  We have babies pretty much year around although we normally try to shut everyone down for the summer.

Here is an overview of how we keep our green cheeks.

DIET:  We feed our flock Volkman Avian Science Conure/Lovebird seed mix.  To this I normally add Goldenfeast granola, Goldenfeast Hookbill Legume, Goldenfeast South American Blend, or something similar.  A dish of Zupreem fruit blend pellets is provided daily.  They get fresh foods & bean/rice mix every morning.  Birdie breads, fresh corn on the cob, scrambled or hard boiled eggs, sprouted grains/pulses, whole wheat bread with peanut butter, or nutriberries are a few extra treats they relish.  We do not use any supplements except for additional calcium during egg laying time.  Cuttlebone is in their cages year around and is also offered to pet green cheeks.  Our birds are water bottle trained but receive fresh water bowls every morning.  Water bottles are run thru the dishwasher every 2-3 days for a thorough cleaning.

CAGING:  A pet green cheek should have a roomy cage as they are very active birds.  A cage no less than 24" by 24" is suggested.  Wire spacing should be no more than 1/2".  Our breeders are housed in cages that measure 36" wide by 28" deep by 30" tall.  Yes, they look a little small in these cages, but they love to be able to fly back and forth.

TOYS:  Green cheeks love toys with bells, swings, wood toys they can chew and foot toys.  Our breeding pairs have toys in their cages and also foot toys.  They love to hang upside down from the top of their cages and pretend they are "bats."  Pet green cheeks also like to hide under the cage paper and love to sleep on their backs.   All the green cheeks seem to love boings and our pairs have a boing in their cages.

NIGHT TIME:  Our bird room lights go off about 8:00 pm and on again about 7:30 am.  A pet green cheek needs at least 10 hours of good quality sleep.  I reccomend covering the cage when it is night night time.  Your baby may also like one of the Happy Huts or Tents to sleep in.
